Porsche’s Boxster has always lived somewhat in the shadow of the 911 even though it has the benefit of a better-balanced chassis. When the flat-six engine was dropped in favour of a new turbocharged four-cylinder in 2016, most enthusiasts landed somewhere on the scale between ‘Disappointed’ and ‘Horrified.’
Enter Porsche’s GT Department with a new 992-based 8,000rpm, 414bhp naturally aspirated flat-six, shared between the Boxster Spyder and Cayman GT4. Coupled with the mini-supercar styling of the Spyder, with its stunning buttressed roof, double bubble rear cowl, and GT3-inspired front end, suddenly this mid-engined sports car was in a class of its own.
Whilst it may be from the Boxster family, this is a serious junior supercar with a top speed of 300km/h and suspension and brakes carried over wholesale from the GT3.
Steve Sutcliffe, writing for Evo magazine said:
“On the road, this all feels pretty special, to be honest. On a sunny day with the hood down, and under full beans in a low-ish gear, there is nothing quite like the Spyder. And its combination of attributes is unique. The highlights include immense and instant throttle response at anything above 3000rpm, a spine-chilling exhaust scream, eye-watering body control, pin sharp steering and some of the best brakes you’ll come across in any road car, at any price. Yet it’s the detail of the Spyder’s responses that arguably leave the biggest impression of all.”
With the 718 now completely off-sale, and Porsche left burnt with the remains of an ill-fated electric sports car program, these 718 Spyders represent a high point in road-going sports cars and as such will remain collectable well into the future.
