A celebration of the 911’s heritage and one of the ultimate expressions of Porsche Exclusive, the Sport Classic distils everything enthusiast admire about the analogue generation. Beautifully proportioned, exquisitely finished and deeply rewarding to drive, it is one of the rarest and most carefully considered road going 911’s Porsche has created.

Conceived over three years by Porsche Exclusive, the specialist department responsible for the marque’s most individual and exacting commissions, the Sport Classic was unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show as a return to Porsche’s tradition of building exceptionally small series. Production was limited to just 250 examples worldwide, all of which were reportedly spoken for within 48 hours. Of that allocation, only three cars were available to Australia, each destined for a particularly valued Porsche client.

Its significance begins with the 997 itself. For many enthusiasts, this generation represents a particularly satisfying meeting point between the traditional 911 and the modern performance car: compact in proportion, naturally aspirated, hydraulically steered and still intimately connected to its driver. In the Sport Classic, Porsche concentrated those qualities into an especially evocative rear-wheel-drive, six-speed manual 911, one that feels mechanical, communicative and alive in a way that has become increasingly difficult to replicate.

The Sport Classic’s silhouette is both familiar and unmistakably its own. Its body is based upon the wider Carrera 4S, 44 millimetres broader across the rear than the Carrera models, yet power is delivered exclusively to the rear wheels. Above sits the newly developed double-dome roof, a beautifully resolved reference to the Carrera GT, while behind is the defining fixed “ducktail” spoiler inspired by the legendary 1973 Carrera RS 2.7. A unique SportDesign front apron and spoiler lip, model-specific side skirts, revised rear treatment, lightweight aluminium doors and black-framed bi-xenon headlights complete a shape that draws deeply from Porsche history without ever appearing retrospective for its own sake.

Every example was finished in the newly created Sport Classic Grey, a solid colour inspired by Porsche’s early grey finishes and reserved at the time exclusively for this model. Subtle contrasting stripes extend across the bonnet, double-dome roof and ducktail, visually lengthening the car while allowing its unusual details to reveal themselves gradually. It is an extraordinarily considered specification: restrained from a distance, yet endlessly detailed at close quarters.

Its special 19-inch Sport Classic wheels were designed as a contemporary interpretation of the forged Fuchs wheel that became synonymous with the early 911. Finished with high-gloss black centres and contrasting polished surfaces, they sit perfectly beneath the widened rear arches. Behind them are Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes, their yellow callipers announcing one of the most capable braking systems then available on a road-going 911.

The engineering beneath the surface was every bit as purposeful. The 3.8-litre direct-injected, naturally aspirated flat-six was derived from that of the contemporary Carrera S and equipped with Porsche’s factory Powerkit. A carbon-fibre airbox, revised intake manifold, remapped engine management and a specially developed sports exhaust lifted output from 385 PS to 408 PS, accompanied by 420 Nm of torque. Porsche paid particular attention not only to its performance, but also to its intake and exhaust resonance, giving the Sport Classic a voice intended to recall the more visceral 911s of the 1970s.

Paired exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission and factory short-shift mechanism, the engine sends its power through a mechanical limited-slip differential to the rear wheels. Porsche Active Suspension Management with the Sport Chassis lowered the car by 20 millimetres, while Sport Chrono further sharpened its responses. The result was performance worthy of its appearance: 0–100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and a maximum speed of 302 km/h. More important than the numbers, however, is the manner in which it delivers them. The progressive response of an atmospheric flat-six, the weight and accuracy of hydraulic steering, and the physical satisfaction of choosing each gear for yourself.

If the exterior established the Sport Classic’s identity, its interior demonstrated the full reach of Porsche Exclusive. Almost every visible surface was finished in rich Espresso Nature natural leather, extending across the dashboard, door panels, centre console and even the individual air-vent louvres, each meticulously covered by hand in exceptionally thin leather.

For the adaptive sports seats and door inserts, Porsche developed an entirely new woven material formed from narrow strips of smooth leather interlaced with contrasting yarn. Framed by light-grey piping, it gives the appearance of traditional Porsche textile upholstery but with a depth, tactility and craftsmanship quite unlike anything used by the company before. Porsche also created a special square-weave-style carpet material specifically for the model. These were two materials never previously employed in a Porsche production car, forming part of an interior specification whose precise combination of colour, leatherwork, weaving and carpeting has never been repeated.

The detail continues through the hand-sewn contrasting cross-stitching of the three-spoke steering wheel, the aluminium gear and handbrake levers, silver-grey seatbelts and light-grey Alcantara headlining. The black instrument faces repeat the car’s exterior stripe motif, while an individually numbered plaque beside the glovebox and matching illuminated door-sill identification, records each car’s place within the series. Even the ignition surround, owner’s-manual folder and key wallet were finished in matching Espresso Nature leather. It was not simply highly specified; it was conceived and executed as a complete object.

The 997 Sport Classic was far more than a model carrying a selection of historical references. It brought together the wide body of the Carrera 4S, rear-wheel drive, a naturally aspirated Powerkit engine, short-shift manual transmission, sports chassis, mechanical differential, ceramic brakes and an almost obsessive degree of bespoke craftsmanship. No other 997 combined those elements, and no subsequent Sport Classic has recreated the same formula.

The 2010 Porsche 911 Sport Classic occupies a rare position even among Porsche’s most coveted limited-production models. This example was delivered new by Porsche Centre Brisbane in July 2010 and throughout its private ownerships, it has been maintained and serviced with exceptional care, a meticulous Porsche only history reflected today in its outstanding, collector-grade condition.

For the serious Porsche collector, this is a rare opportunity to acquire one of the defining 997 generation models that is not simply a limited edition, but one of the most complete and collectible expressions of the exclusive modern Porsche sportcar.
