1997 Porsche Boxster 986

Following a somewhat precarious period for Porsche’s finances in the early nineties, it was clear the company needed to streamline their manufacturing processes and produce a replacement for the ageing transaxle entry-level sports cars. 

Taking inspiration from the 1950s 550 Spyder, the Boxster was the first all-new Porsche in 19 years, and would offer enthusiasts a sub-911 Porsche with genuine performance and handling from its mid-engined layout, accompanied by the intoxicating sound of a flat-six engine. 

Sharing the front end styling and engineering with the soon-to-be-released 996 generation 911, this was Porsche’s first water-cooled six cylinder, and its light weight and torquey but free-revving nature found Porsche many new fans, with the Boxster going on to live for four generations and nearly 25 years.

Producing a modest 204bhp, the first generation Boxster isn’t the fastest car on the road, but with sub 1300kg kerb weight and compact size, it’s quick enough to enjoy and can out-handle far more exotic machinery. The engine howls as you chase the redline, turn-in is direct and the car remains agile but secure. Because these Boxsters were so useable, finding low kilometre, collector-grade examples is increasingly hard, with prices steadily rising.
