“King of the Hill”

By the late 1980s, the C4 Corvette was becoming more and more strangled by emissions regulations, and Chevrolet wanted to build something to put the ‘Vette back on top and bring the fight to Europe’s finest Sports and Supercars.

Having recently purchased Lotus Group, GM decided to commission an all-new four-cam, all-alloy V8 engine, far more sophisticated than anything which had been used in an American car to date.

The level of technology deployed to achieve their goal is shocking, even looking back from today’s perspective - switchable power modes which unlock a second set of intake runners to unleash the full 405bhp (for these later cars) and 7,000rpm of the LT5 engine, three-stage adjustable dampers - Tour, Sport and Performance, a six-speed ZF manual transmission, Bosch ABS, and even Traction Control and Tyre-Pressure Monitoring.

The difference between the ZR-1 and a regular C4 Corvette cannot be overstated. The whole rear of the car is three inches wider to allow for the enormous 315-width rear tyres, and the car feels and sounds much more European than American. Performance is brutal, with its top speed matching the Testarossa and being within a hair of the much more exotic Countach, and acceleration to match.

Contemporary Road Testers were blown away by the performance, and it feels fast even today. In real terms it was significantly quicker in-gear than the equivalent 964 Turbo, and with its sophisticated suspension and near perfect weight distribution, it was able to make the most of its enormous tyres in corners too, pulling the highest lateral load of any production car tested by MotorTrend.

With the ongoing cost involved in building the LT5 engine, it’s no surprise that it wasn’t economical to keep a version for the C5-generation Corvette, so subsequent models stuck with the pushrod LS1.

No other Corvette was fitted with an overhead cam engine until 2023, which makes the C4 ZR-1 a high point in Corvette’s 73 year history, and a blue-chip collector car.

For many people, this was their Poster Car - usually in Torch Red - an everyman’s performance hero, but the same technology which made this cutting edge in the ‘90s makes this an enjoyable, easy modern classic to live with.

The build quality is surprisingly excellent, with no squeaks or rattles at all, even from the removable targa roof panel, and everything works as intended, from the individual bolster adjustment of the seats, to the excellent hifi system and the touchless remote central locking, which unlocks the car as you walk up to it, which, in 1995, must have felt like you were living in the future.

It comes with a choice of body-colour, or tinted blue glass hardtops, which when the sun is shining can be stowed under the rear glass hatch, leaving plenty of luggage room beneath.

This is a car which will surprise the uninitiated. It drives and feels like a European car, with a supremely comfortable driving position, excellent gearshift, and an engine which feels cultured and rev-happy, a far cry from its small-block V8 roots.

This 1995 ZR-1 is a collector-grade example of a car which flew under the radar when new, quite literally (iykyk), and was produced in lower numbers than hoped due to it being sold during a recession at nearly twice the price of a standard C4 Corvette. While a rare car, it’s still exceptional value when compared with its contemporary rivals, many of which are pushing mid-six-figures and as an ownership proposition it benefits from GM’s legendary reliability.

Brought to Australia and Complied in 2021, it has been treasured from new, with regular but minimal use. It’s currently displaying just under 26,000 miles, and feels like it.

Under its current ownership the advanced Bilstein Adjustable dampers have been replaced, and it drives faultlessly, with a folder of previous receipts showing long-term care and attention.

You won’t find a better example anywhere. In the iconic colours of Red over Grey, it’s ready to be enjoyed by its next custodian, both as a nostalgia trip and a serious driver’s car. Even the included brochures are a delight, brimming with the confidence of a company who knew they’d built a truly special, world class performance car.
