The arrival of the Porsche 911 in 1963 established an enduring formula: a compact sporting body, an air-cooled flat-six engine mounted behind the rear axle and an unmistakable driving character. 

Through the original 911 and the succeeding G-Series, Porsche continually refined that formula without ever losing sight of the qualities that made the car so distinctive.

By the end of the 1980s, however, the 911 was ready for its most comprehensive evolution yet.

Introduced as the Type 964, the new generation retained the familiar silhouette of its predecessors while incorporating an extraordinary level of development beneath the surface. Porsche claimed that approximately 85 per cent of the car was new, with advances including power steering, anti-lock braking, improved heating and ventilation, revised suspension and significantly greater refinement.

Today, the 964 occupies an especially appealing position in the history of the 911. It preserves the compact proportions, analogue character and air-cooled engine of the earlier cars, while introducing a level of comfort, usability and engineering sophistication that makes it particularly enjoyable in modern driving.
