This French hot hatch is a rolling reminder that you don't need 400 horsepower when you've got 900kg, zero driver aids and suspension tuned by someone who clearly enjoyed chaos. You don't drive a 205 GTI, you negotiate with it, you occasionally apologise to it and when you get it right it rewards you with one of the purest driving experiences you can have on four wheels.

Inside, its peak 80s cool with its iconic cloth bucket seats, red carpet floor and its big red GTI icon centred on the steering wheel. 

Behind the wheel steering is incredibily accurate, between gear changes is so mechanical, the throttle response is sharp and the motor pulls like a freight train.
