Australia has always been known for its high-performance highway patrol pursuit vehicles.
Ranging from supercharged V8 Holden Commodores, turbocharged Ford Falcons, and Chrysler 300 SRT's. But what most have forgotten is the go-kart-like superfast little Mini Cooper S that was used between 1967 - 1972 that could do 120 miles an hour and probably go around a corner at the same speed (disclaimer: NOT ADVICE, do not try at home).
Whilst the standard Mini Cooper S was certainly no slouch, the 'Police Special' was equipped with specialised equipment. The core was a 1275cc A-series engine which were fitted with larger 1 1/2" SU carburettors (rather than the standard 1 1/4") and modified cams, although they were required to be "factory standard".
Police-spec models frequently featured a 3.93:1 final drive ratio, paired with a 120mph speedometer. They also had modified lowered seating positions to fit all junior and senior constables behind the wheel.
Mini Cooper S' were known for their lightweight bodies, torquey twin-carburettor 1275cc motors that was quick off the mark, stupidly grippy around corners and rather comfortable day-to-day due to that innovative hydrolastic suspension.
On our showroom floor is a late 1970 built and Australian complied Morris Mini Cooper S Unmarked Police Special. This example was in commission throughout 1971 along the Hume Highway in Goulburn before the HWP decided to decommission the Mini Cooper S' in favour of the Ford Falcons.
Numbers matching, correct colours and even the same ex-BMC mechanic maintaining the vehicle since 1972. This vehicle has been under long-term ownership since 1997 and has been subjected to a ground-up restoration by marque specialists and finished only years ago.
This car holds all of the typical tell-tale signs of an original Cooper S let alone the originality of a 'Police Special'.
Due to the low sump design of Mini Cooper S, most were written off in high-speed pursuits, so to find one of these like vehicles today is incredibly rare and highly collectible within the Mini community.
Complete with a fully-functional period correct siren, magnetic mount pursuit lights and illuminated 'Police' signs, this ex-copper is just so cool in every way.
Don't miss this opportunity to own an exciting part of Australian automotive and police history.
